Direct entry experienced police officers joining ASPS
If you are joining ASPS as an experienced police officer, you may be eligible to join SFPP. Once your eligibility is confirmed, your employer will enroll you in SFPP.
If you are already a member of SFPP:
If you are currently working for an Alberta police agency that participates in SFPP, your SFPP pension will continue in your new policing role with ASPS.
If you are transferring from another pension plan that has an agreement with SFPP:
If you are coming from a police agency that does not participate in SFPP, you may be able to transfer your pensionable service to SFPP through the National Transfer Agreement.
If you are currently with the RCMP, SFPP has an agreement that may allow you to transfer your pensionable service from the RCMP pension plan into SFPP.
If no transfer agreement applies:
If your pension is with a registered pension plan that does not have a transfer agreement with SFPP, you may be able to take a lump-sum payout of that benefit and purchase a portion or the full amount of service under SFPP.

Already receiving an SFPP pension?
If you are already receiving an SFPP pension, you are not eligible to rejoin SFPP. You may still become a police officer with ASPS; however, you will not participate in SFPP. You may be eligible to participate in a different pension plan. Please contact your HR pay and benefits department for more information.

No, there is no SRP provided by SFPP. In 2026, the salary cap for SFPP is $218,991. You will earn pension benefits on salary up to the salary cap. You do not make contributions on salary above the salary cap, and salary earned above the salary cap is not included in your pension calculation.
SFPP is a defined benefit pension plan that provides pension payments for life based on a formula that includes pensionable salary and years of pensionable service. SFPP was designed specifically with police careers in mind and includes early retirement and bridge benefit provisions you might not find in other plans.
Each plan has its own unique benefit calculation formulas, benefit options, retirement eligibility rules, and rules for how cost-of-living adjustments may apply. Please visit the plans’ websites for more information.
SFPP has tools such as the pension estimator that can help you explore how potential changes to your expected retirement age, salary, and years of service may affect the pension you receive. In addition, we always recommend speaking with an independent financial advisor for inquiries related to your personal finances.
Please call the SFPP Member Services Centre at 1-877-809-7477 if you have other questions.
